Clarus Site Solutions is delighted to be working with Robertson Construction to deliver high speed internet and voice connectivity to the RAF Lossiemouth construction project.

Background:

The RAF Lossiemouth project is a £100 million development for Boeing which will be home to the new fleet of Poseidon MRA Mk1. This is set to boost the UK’s maritime patrolling capabilities.

The 33,000 m2 strategic facility, which is part of an extensive upgrade at RAF Lossiemouth to futureproof the airbase, includes a three-bay aircraft hangar for the Poseidon, crew and maintainer training facilities. Also included is flight planning facilities, workshop areas for 600 personnel, as well as squadron accommodation.

The Robertson Construction project team were on the ground at RAF Lossiemouth from April 2018, following a 12-month collaboration with Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) during preconstruction to design the state-of-the-art facility. Connectivity from day one was hugely important for business operations, communication and health and safety.

Solution:

We initially deployed our Clarus Connect LTE solution on site, utilising the available mobile networks in the area to provide a high speed internet connection allowing the project team to work form the first day they arrived on site. This was connected into Robertson Construction’s Meraki equipment proving a fully managed and supported network.

We also installed a fully hosted, feature rich VoIP system proving the site team with office grade voice connectivity.

We then arranged the installation of a dedicated 100MB fibre connection directly into the site compound. This was a complex, lengthy process due to the restrictions in place with the MOD. This did not hinder progress as our LTE solution continued to provide connectivity while we planned the installation with Openreach.

Once ready, we switched the primary data connection to the leased line and retained the LTE connection as second line failover should that ever be required.
